Physical Appearance: General appearance. Thomas also has a gunshot injury to his left hand, which he keeps in a brace. Likewise, he has relatively new scars on both wrists left over from attempting suicide in late Summer/early fall 1925.
Even in livery uniform, Thomas constantly carries cigarettes (either in a pack or hand-rolled in a small case), and either matches or a lighter.

Noteworthy Positive Characteristics: Thomas is loyal. Though Thomas is intent on advancing at Downton—and later, outside of Downton—through any means necessary, he is fundamentally and thoroughly committed to the place. Thomas has had his struggles in Downton but it is a place he has great respect for. He is likewise hurt when tragedy befalls the Crawley’s, with Sybil and later Matthew’s deaths, and when Carson calls his sexuality foul. Though Thomas has not necessarily made friends in his time at Downton, this is a place where he was, in some ways, free from the struggles of his childhood and young adulthood. He holds it in high regard, and would do whatever he could to protect it.
Thomas is sensitive. He cares more for clocks than he does for people, but in those moments where you see the genuineness of his closeness with people, you can see the ways people shape him. In every case of his romantic life going astray, he is left a more bitter, self-loathing man, thinking that the lack of affection reflects on his own personal failings. His friendship with Sybil Crawley during the war is especially important to him, and her death is a shattering moment for him; he later extends his affection to her daughter, Sybbie, and the rest of the children in the house. Thomas is a liar. Part of this is that he has to be inherently secretive, because being a homosexual is illegal in England at the time. Most of it is that he does not think that other people are necessarily worthy of the truth. He builds himself up and refuses to let people know things about him unless he’s decided to come close to them (like Miss O’Brien, or Jimmy).
Thomas is vindictive. Once he’s set sights on a person as being worthy of his scorn or malice, he doesn’t let up. He reacts strongly to real and imagined slights. Whenever he can, he tries to get back at people that have spoken poorly of him, made his life difficult, or might otherwise compromise his position in the house. Two examples of this are the Duke of Crowborough, who he had an affair with some time before the series, whose letters he retains on the off-chance he may need to blackmail him; and Nanny West, who he sets Cora against with a mild fabrication that she is neglecting Sybbie Branson, because she spoke to him like a servant and refused to let Thomas say hello to the children.
Thomas is petty. This ties in with his vindictiveness and conniving, but Thomas refuses to let things go even before they happen. When Bates shows up to be Lord Grantham’s valet, Thomas instantly dislikes him because he symbolizes Thomas’s struggles to advance in the house. When Carson shows an interest in tutoring Alfred at being a footman, Thomas protests that he never received the same treatment when he was coming up. Every moment of his time in service at Downton—and even his time in the military—is fueled by this belief that other people are the cause of his misery, which feeds his pettiness toward them.
Thomas is manipulative. When Baxter, who has known Thomas nearly all his life, comes to work as a lady’s maid in Downton, Thomas continuously tries to keep her under his thumb because he knows things about her past. He retains letters and personal knowledge for potential blackmail, such as when O’Brien turns against him after he kisses Jimmy—he gives Bates information on her causing Lady Grantham’s miscarriage, though Bates doesn’t know that’s what the information is, so that O’Brien will convince Jimmy to back down.
